Dungeons and Dragons

Things can become quite boring in vast lands of white computers and short neat haircuts. In a world of boring work to the grind atmospheres, people often look for extremely alternative realities on their down time, and more often than not end up at the local playing "who can empty the most glasses".

However, I myself have recently found myself in a new form of reality of the mind which helps to expand and intrigue my current limitations, whilst having much more fun that one would playing "finish the drink".

Dungeons and Dragons is the name of this alternate reality, and whilst most would look at this as a nerdy or dorky game, just hold your thoughts right there. I used to be the one who was always playing sports and random jock like things growing up, I would be down at local basketball arena 5-6 nights a week sweating my guts out, and whilst these years, its been watered down to taking the dogs for a big walk, I have now found myself getting a really high level of satisfaction and enjoyment from this game of the mind. We are often given many challenges which we have to overcome, and in a world where there isn't just one thing happening at a time, are given an unlimited amount of prospective storey lines to choose from.

Unlike sitting in front of a computer with a head set on shooting someone you have never met, who lives in who knows what country, DnD as its known is situated around one table with roughly 5 companions and a Dungeon Master (also known as a Game Master), This allows for lag free social fun for all! The Dungeon master, or DM as its known in game, places everyone either into a fantasy town where they can soon find themselves coming across a quest or mission, or just places them directly into their quest. Quests are only limited by the most advanced computers... Our brains. They can vary from simple scouting missions, to full blown rescue missions, where someone of grave importance has found themselves in the frying pan and are in need of being found and returned to their village or castle.

Questing can incorporate many different adventures that you can imagine to the best of your abilities, where one minute you may be battling hordes of goblins, and the next running for your life from a glowing red angry dragon! Players can experience this fantasy world in the comfort of their own home, with a group of good friends, and a table full of snacks and goodies, and even a couple of cold bevies for the older questers.

Battling is not all you will experience in game, unlike the computer game mentality, you are playing it like you are in the world, and must role play your chosen characters in what ever way is needed to talk with people to get the best from this world you have created. Often being diplomatic rather than aggressive will yield more long term fun results, trust me, I learned this one the hard way, but on that note, I was playing a Barbarian Half Orc nammed Thud! So as far as role playing is concerned, I was just playing my role! Don't ask about the whole half orc thing, I don't wish to know how that came about!

The dungeons and dragons world has a full frame work of rules and limitations, where the out come of things happening are not decided by simply doing the said action, a 20 sided dice, also known as a d20, is rolled to find out how the said event is played. Often the higher the number means the greater chance of success, rolling a 20 is usually a natural success, and rolling a 1 is a fumble. This often results in a very sore player character!

So in finishing this hub, I say, have a look past the dorky surface of this fun game, and even give it a shot if you are game! For those who have a good imagination (Yes you ladies!) I highly recommend it! The more you can imagine in your world, the more fun you'll find it. Having an experienced Dungeon Master will also aid everyone having a fun time too. Just make sure not to annoy your Dungeon Master, talking from first hand experience, all they have to do is introduce a stupidly powerful monster of any description, and you'll soon be needing to create another character. Yes that's right, I forgot to mention there are no save points, no coins for one ups or any of that! It's just like real life, if you run in front of a car on a freeway, there is a good chance that you may not survive. So as you can see, unlike most computer games, you are given the encouragement to actually care for your well being!

Thanks for reading, I'd love to hear your stories DND enthusiasts! And answer any questions for those interested in playing this fantasy reality world!

For those that enjoy imaginary lands and limitless adventure, there isn't a game to top Dungeons and Dragons.

I've played a lawful good paladin and traveled the Ethereal Plane and the Nine Hells. I've taken on the role of brooding thief-acrobat, plying some of my less reputable skills in the dark alleys of bustling port cities. I've dabbled in magic, playing a character whose avarice for magic items matched that of any dwarf merchant.

And I've created long campaigns as Dungeon Master, some spanning months and years. And the best part of it all was the people I played with, many of whom were, or became, close friends.

I enjoyed your article about D&D. It's always good to see people talking about the game as a positive experience.

I havn't yet stepped outside of my favourite character or class, Half Orc Barbarian, its just too much fun, and totally me! =)

We have started on one of those long quests you are talking about, our DM (And my girlfriend) has created a mysticle land of warriors, with plenty of back stories and all that =)

End of the day, best fun ever!
